| This print depicts a scene from the Old Testament story of Tobit. Tobias has just returned home from his journey to Media, where he recovered the riches of his father. As the travellers are welcomed back, Tobias' travelling companion reveals himself to be the archangel Raphael. In astonishment and awe, father and son fall to their knees, but as soon as they look up again, the angel has disappeared. Rembrandt ingeniously depicts the instant of Raphael's ascension, as only his feet are visible from the enveloping clouds. | ||||
