| Pierre Firmin Martin (père Martin, 1817-1891) was a renowned Parisian art dealer, who dealt in Jongkind's paintings (as well as Barbizon and Impressionist artists). The well-documented correspondence of the artist proves a close friendship with Martin. The print was commissioned by P.G. Hamerton for his book Etching and Etchers. London 1868. Most impressions come from the edition published in ´l'Illustration nouvelle', in 1880. These have an engraved title and number. According to Delteil the first state is extremely rare. | ||||
