The title of the print traditionally was The Schoolmaster given by Gersaint. Hinterding (Fondation Custodia) mentions the title in a sale in 1755 Een Lieremannetje by een Vrouwtje, dat inn Avondstond over de Deur legt

It is one of the first of the night pieces Rembrandt made. In later impressions the dark parts are worked over. |
