REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN

REMBRANDT HARMENSZ. VAN RIJN
1606 Leiden – 1669 Amsterdam
View of Amsterdam.

Etching, c. 1641

11.1 x 15.2 cm. The white paper 1-3 mm. trimmed at the bottom.
A fine impression on 17th century paper without watermark.
Bartsch 210, White-Boon (Hollstein 210) only state, Nowell Usticke 210.
From the collection of Hermann Detmold, Hannover (Lugt 760).

The etching shows in reverse the profile of Amsterdam from the north east.
It depicts to the right the windmills on the walled fortifications.
The largest stood on the outermost bullwark on the River IJ, the so-called Rijsenhoofd.
The stump of the tower to the right could be the Zuiderkerk.
To the left of the Rijzenhoofd one can discern the warehouses and
shipyards of the VOC, the East India Company.
The Montelbaanstoren, the Oude Kerk, and perhaps the stump of the tower of the
West Church. The view is not absolutely accurate.
Rembrandt made the etching maybe sitting on the Kadijk, the dyke that runs up
the north-eastern edge of the city.
Nowell-Usticke decribes the plate as “an uncommon, very popular plate”.
