Rembrandt made two etchings with the subject Christ at Emmaus. The so-called larger plate he made twenty years later in 1654. The difference in style is notable. In our early depiction from 1634 Christ sits at the right of the table. The later one shows Christ as the centre of the whole image.
In the earlier impressions like this one the pale drypoint lines in the rays of the halo are still showing. Even the earliest impressions have foul biting under the table. The plate has been lost since the 17th century and was not in the possession of Clement de Jonghe, according to the inventory list of 1679. |
