Excellent impression. Very good condition trimmed on the borderline. Untill the exhibition in Leuven and Paris, the title of the print was always called The temptation of St. Anthony.
The name of the Saint appears even in the second state on his arm. However in the inventary of the plates owned by Volcxken Diericx the successor and widow of Hieronymus Cock the plate was called St. Christopher. |
| |
| Traditionally the print was ascribed to Bosch. The inscription Hieronymus Bos inve engraved in the plate by Cock bearing witness. Most of the engravings ascribed to Bosch are now renamed as Follower after Bosch not withstanding the name on the print, missing a direct drawing or painting after which the prints were made. |
