op Zee, den 28 December 1614, lanck zijnde 52 Roede voeten, voor aenden muijl breet 9, en de
Staert 12 roe Voeten”

17.2 x 31 cm large margin all round.
Watermark: kind of fish in an ornamental roundel.
Literature: F. Muller 1293 (who ascribes the print to Jan van de Velde and considers it rare),
Van Stolk 1296, Keyes A.1, Hollstein 23 (Cl. Jansz. Visscher) I(II).

Excellent impression and condition. The depicted stranded whale follows the tradition set by
Goltzius and Saenredam of depicting the taking of measurements and the visiting flock of people set
against the coast and dunes. The size and the text of the original print by Esaias van de Velde is different.
