A beautiful early impression with the drypoint showing clearly. Some small reinforcements verso.
This is one of the last prints Rembrandt made. The subject was used by Rembrandt before but some
30 years earlier. St.Peter and St. John coming to the gate of the Temple met a beggar who was lame from
birth and who asked them for alms. Peter answered that he had no silver or gold to give, but he healed
him in the name of Christ. It is unclear where Rembrandt had his inspiration from. Several suggestions
have been made. Only the first and the second state where a correction has been made in the body of Peter,
are considered to be by Rembrandt. The later states are corrected by others. |
