| Two couples of lovers in an inn |
| |
Engraving.
22 x 29.3 cm. trimmed on the platemark. With AHubertus ex. |
| |
The publisher Adriaen Huybrechts. And text in Dutch, Latin and French.
Each in two lines and engraved in different type.
Provenance: Albert van Loock (Lugt 3751), Unidentified or Gaston de Ramaix (Lugt 4099), a collection with more late 16th century prints.
Literature: See Cat. Spiegel van Alledag. Entry 31, p. 172 note 5. |
| |
Excellent impression of this rare print. Good condition. Untouched.
The original etching by Matsys is illustrated in the entry in Spiegel.
This print itself is only 8.6 x 11 cm. The text in Dutch is the same as in our print,
where this is translated in Latin and French. The jester is there and in the
painting or print hanging on the wall one sees a man do his ease.
These show that the simple farmers are being robbed by smart prostitutes. |

The publisher Adriaen Huberti or Huybrechts (died after 1614) is also known as figuursnijder
(engraver) and kunstvercooper (artdealer). His name can be found as such in the Liggeren of the
St Lucas guild in 1573 in Antwerp. Most of the published prints have religious subjects.
In the New Hollstein volume on Peeter van der Borcht there is one print with AHubertus sculp
et exc. The other prints with his name dont have the name of the engraver nor the inventor,
which should be van der Borcht in this case. He also published plates by Collaert and Wierix. |
