The prints are preceded by a 13 page text by Georges Montorgueil. Published by L’Estampe Original (André Marty) in Paris in 1893. On the cover, illustrated with a lithograph by Ibels, the title printed in red “Le Café Concert/Lithographies/de H.-G. Ibels et de H. de Toulouse Lautrec/Texte de Georges Montorgueil/Édité par L’Estampe originale, 17, rue de Rome,-Paris »
This is the Deluxe edition printed by hand on laid Japanese paper by Ancourt. This edition is limited to 50 and has an extra cover with the text in black Le Café Concert, Prix: cinquante francs. The cover is signed by hand in purple-blue ink by Ibels, Montorgueil and Toulouse-Lautrec. The lithographs are c. 46.5 x 29.0 cm. and uncut.
There is also a regular edition on wove paper printed in 500 copies, without the extra cover and not signed by the artists.
According to Wittrock the deluxe edition is very rare and only to be found in six public collections.
The plates by Lautrec depict the following dancers, singers and other famous figures in 1893; 1. Jane Avril. 2. Yvette Guilbert. 3. Paula Brébion. 4. Mary Hamilton. 5. Edmée Lescot. 6. Madame Abdala. 7. Aristide Bruant. 8. Caudieux, Petit Casino. 9. Ducarre aux Ambassadeurs.
10. Une Spectatrice. 11. Comique Excentrique Anglais.
Delteil 28 – 38, Wittrock 18 – 28, Adriani (86) 16 – 26.
All the lithographs are except for a few stockflecks in nearly pristine condition. The covers are a little frayed as usual.
The subjects in the plates by Ibels are also mentioned in the text by Montorgueil.
The Album has a very good provenance. It was in collection of M. Guérin, who was one of the first avid collectors of Toulouse-Lautrec. His collectors stamp is found on the outer (extra) cover (Lugt 1872b). It was bought by H.M. Petiet, a famous collector in Paris. His stamp is also on the outer cover and on all the prints except Aristide Bruant (Delteil 34, Wittrock 24). |
