| Jacob de Gheyn first trained as an artist by his father and later in 1588 became a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius in Haarlem. The depiction of the lion is already more naturalistic then the images from his contemporary artists. The lion is of course also the symbol of the House of Orange. Prince Maurits became a patron of the artist. |
