A very good impression. Trimmed between the platemark and borderline. A flattened horizontal centrefold as usual.
Verso traces of black used to transfer the image. The engraving, the second of the series of antique Roman statues, represents Hercules and his son Telephos. The inscription relates the statue to Emperor Commodus ( reigned 180-192). Three of the maybe originally larger projected series were in fact first printed after the death of Goltzius by Adolfz. Only one of the plates is known in one unique earlier impression, the Apollo. The other two are only known in the so-called second state. The first being surmised by Hirschmann. |
